This morning I tuned into NBC’s The Today Show and they were introducing their segment about “No Makeup Monday.” All of the hosts of the show went without makeup and admitted that none of them were comfortable with the situation while speaking out about their hashtag: #loveyourselfie. The hosts, with the help of their guest, Dr. Oz, shared the results of a survey conducted by Today and AOL. The findings revolved around body image concerns between men and women and what I took away the most from the segment was this:
Women spend 2 weeks a year on their appearance.
Now this is obviously an average but think about that for a second. Think about all the things you did the in last two weeks. My last two weeks consisted of exploring Chicago’s public transportation system, -15 degree temps in Indiana, playing dress up like characters of Les Miserables, obsessing over the Olympics, flying to Denver and voluntarily letting a spider touch me. That’s a lot of stuff, right? Well, imagine if I had spent those last two weeks sitting in front of a mirror or staring at a closet.
We all know what is going to happen to our bodies eventually: gravity is going to set it, we are going to change and potentially shrink. But why fight it? Your body has been growing and changing since the day you were born so why stop it now? As Matt Lauer pointed out, why not beat Mother Nature to the punch and own your image.
Now I challenge you – take back your two weeks!
