My first recruitment visit this semester landed me back in Philadelphia with the Kappa Iota chapter at UPenn. Last semester the vice president of membership and I planned the chapter’s first round of recruitment with a Great Gatsby theme and we were able to work together with the chapter to execute a fantastic round. The round was easily the most unique theme and the women going through recruitment raved about it!
The decorations included glasses filled with gold spray painted pearls that resembled champagne bubbles. Black feather boas and balloon ceilings helped decorate by using minimal “frills.” A graphic design major in the chapter made a Sigma Kappa banner that resembled the Jay Gatsby monograms from the 2013 film. Ellen also included paper cut outs of flappers and men in zoot suits. The t-shirts even resembled the art deco logo from the movie.
The women had several other successful rounds of recruitment and the campus also had more bumps along the road than any other recruitment I have ever encountered. One of my fondest memories from the second night of recruitment was when the women and I realized that a woman going through recruitment decided to drop her gum… on the carpet. I spent the 15 minutes in between events being Girl Scouty and using a knife to remove the gum.
In the end, we were all tuckered out and in need of a pint of Ben and Jerry’s
